Begins when regiment leaves from near Toledo travels through New York, Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia. Thoughtful entries about the sights he sees, the battlefields they pass through, the other soldiers and a comparison of Alexander Dumas and Victor Hugo. Describes his visit to Mount Vernon. One undated letter from Lizzie Reynolds to Smith describes her visit to New York, her hope to send him a photograph, and preparations for Christmas. A June 8, 1866 program for an Excursion to Glymont by Foundry M.E. Sunday School.
